Recently, a lawsuit has been filed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and a Texas teenager stating that people as young as 18 years old should be able to purchase and carry handguns. Should people be able to purchase and bear handguns that young? The answer is no.
Eighteen is a big number in our society. It's the year you become a legal adult. You gain so much responsibility, such as being able to enlist in the military and being able to vote. However, there are many 18-year-olds that are still immature and cannot handle all of this responsibility. So why would you give them more? There are many 18-year-olds who can handle it, but the fact is there are so many who cannot handle it.
Owning and carrying a gun is a huge responsibility and many people don't think about how big of a deal it is. A gun is a powerful weapon. Why do 18-year-olds need this type of protection? If they need this, they must be part of something inappropriate, so why would you enable them? This lawsuit isn't about a shotgun used for hunting that's impossible to conceal. This is a small gun that can be carried anywhere. These guns are not intended for hunting. Would you feel safe walking around mall wondering how many teenagers are carrying such a deadly weapon?
Many people argue for the age to be lowered to 18 using the same argument as the drinking age: If you are old enough to fight and die for your country in the military, you are old enough to carry a gun around every day. This is totally off base.
You don't show up to basic training and get handed a gun. When you are in the military you are trained. Military personnel are trained to use these weapons properly. They are also taught restraint, and self-confidence, which enables them to safely bear arms. It's not like they are turning 18, obtaining a gun and using it for pleasure. It is their job to use these weapons safely, efficiently and with a purpose.
The only way I would feel safe letting younger people buy handguns would be if it was very hard to obtain them. If the person had to go through a training course that taught them how to use the weapon properly, then maybe. They should also have to finish the course with a difficult test that truly demonstrates they paid attention, and they mature enough to handle this responsibility. However, I don't think it's enough. They should be subject to psychological testing and a background check. They shouldn't have any violent outbursts in their past or any times where they were overly depressed. They also need to show that they are mentally stable and are not going to do anything irrational with the gun.
As an 18-year-old, I cannot think of any reason why I would need a gun. I feel safer knowing that my peers aren't carrying guns around.

If you're 18-years-old and you feel you need a handgun to protect yourself, you need a lifestyle change. Things are only going to get worse from there. If guns are more readily available to people, they will become less feared and people will become sloppy with them. This could lead to traumatic and devastating events.
There are better things that 18-year-olds should be doing that don't involve handguns. They shouldn't be carrying concealed weapons because that is asking for trouble.
At 18-years-old, you are gaining so much responsibility for yourself: a handgun is the last thing that you need to be worrying about. At 18-years-old, people should be focusing on their futures and what they plan on doing, not worrying about carrying around weapons.
Weapons lead to violence. You don't go to a store to buy a weapon to look at it. You buy the weapon to use it.
At 18-years-old, people really shouldn't be concerned with them.
